KILLER AIRBRUSH Q&A: How often should the airbrush be cleaned?

AFTER EACH USE. Too many airbrushes take their instrument for granted and don’t realize they may be shortening the life of the very tool that makes money for them. Reading the manufacturer’s instructions on care and maintenance and following them religiously will keep your airbrush performing at optimal levels.

They ‘Like’ Us, They ‘Like’ Us! A Milestone on Facebook

Airbrush Action’s  Facebook page, http://on.fb.me/1hdrw30, reached a milestone today: 180,000 ‘Likes,’ and over 1 million views this past week! “When I took charge of the page about a year-and-a-half ago AirbrushActionMag had about 4,000 ‘Likes,’” explained Cliff Stieglitz, Airbrush Action‘s publisher.  “I had virtually no experience with social media, and up to that point hadn’t even seen our own page!  But, I finally took to it, and got good at it.  In fact, I’m currently writing an e-book on how people can more rapidly build their ‘Likes’ and drive traffic to their page. The fact is, I worked really hard on http://facebook.com/AirbrushActionMag, and to this day, I don’t allow anyone else to post to it.”  Stieglitz finds that unless you post every day, or every other day at the very least, your audience will quickly dwindle. “We boost many posts, and find that the “correct” advertising approach on Facebook is key. There’s actually a lot more to it, but that’s beyond the scope of this article.”  In fact, Stieglitz consults a number of companies on Facebook

“Last August, I consulted one company who runs an anti-Islamic Facebook page.  He had about 18,000 ‘Likes’ and bragged that he’d have 20,000 by winter. I helped him engineer a Facebook ad campaign that included an ad featuring a picture of sexy women in burkas. He not only exceeded 20,000 ‘Likes’ in less than a week, but he just passed 200,000!”

AirbrushActionMag showcases tons of great art by some of the world’s best talent, reader art, new product notices, free video streams, and tons more.

The Airbrush Getaway Workshop Program Celebrates 26 Years in Orlando, May 5-9

Learn How to “Pimp” Your Own Ride!

The Airbrush Getaway Workshop Program Celebrates 26 Years in Orlando

The Airbrush Getaway Workshops Are “All Killer, No Filler”

Interest in learning how to airbrush has reached a fever pitch.  And there’s no better place to learn how to airbrush than at the intensive Airbrush Getaway Workshops, produced by Airbrush Action magazine.

In its 26th year, the Airbrush Getaway Workshops will be staged at the Doubletree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld, Monday, May 5th through Friday, May 9th.

The internationally esteemed Airbrush Getaway workshop program is perfect for beginning to advanced artists who seek to learn new skills or take their art to professional levels.

All of the one-day introductory courses will take place on Monday, and are designed to prepare you for the following four-day all-hands-on seminars: Airbrush Mastery, Power Portraits, Automotive Graphics, Automotive Murals on Steel, Plotter Mastery, T-Shirt Lettering Bootcamp, Pinstriping & Lettering Mastery, Creating Killer Skulls, T-Shirt Airbrushing for Fun & Profit, and many more.  All courses are conducted by some of the top talent in the world, including Terry Hill, Javier Soto, Jonathan Pantaleon, Glen Weisgerber, Rod Fuchs, Gary Worthington, Cheryl Vaughn, Troy pierce, and many others.

The Airbrush Getaway, sponsored by Createx Colors, Iwata Airbrush Company, Anest Iwata, Artool, and Airbrush Action has launched many careers, teaching its students how to profit handsomely in art even in spite of one’s self-perceived artistic limitations.  A comment echoed by many Getaway alumni is that more is learned in four days at a Getaway than in four years in college.

Joe Stanford, a Getaway alumnus from Grass Lake, Michigan, thought he had finally reached airbrush nirvana.  “One day you see a celebrity artist in Airbrush Action magazine, and the next day he’s looking over your shoulder helping you! That’s priceless.  A lot of people might be leery of attending a Getaway because they don’t know anyone, but it’s like you’re a part of this huge family as soon as you walk in. There are no clicks or egos.  I loved the Murals class.  Where else can you find all this amazing talent under one roof?”

Nicholas DelGrado, of Sanford, Florida, adds, “It was great to experience the huge pool of talent from all over the country.  This is better than college because it’s geared toward exactly what I do (skulls and flames); in college you have to extrapolate bits and pieces that apply to you, and that can represent a lot of sorting.”  When asked if he’d recommend the class to someone else, Mr. DelGrado responded, “Oh my god, did you see what one student did who never used an airbrush before? In the course of only four days he turned out a piece of art that was really exceptional. I would absolutely recommend that someone take an Airbrush Getaway”

Seven-time alum Shena King, of Hanson, Idaho, still benefits from the Getaway. “There’s so much information.  The instructors don’t hold anything back and offer everything they know.  A Getaway is absolutely the best way to learn to airbrush. Learning on your own can be so difficult because there are too many little secrets that they teach you here that would take forever to learn on your own; and much of it comes on the first day!”

Curt Bacon, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, echoed many of the students’ sentiment.  I’ve been painting for 20 years and this class has taken me to the next level.  The murals course is well, well worth the money.”

Pinstriping is another course that’s a proven hit.  “It was interesting,” observed Terry Hill, “to see the strong response to the one- and four-day Pinstriping classes featuring Glen Weisgerber, a remarkable veteran talent.”

“I really enjoyed watching the progress of the students. It energizes me to think that I can impart knowledge that has taken me 25 years to learn, in a concise manner, that doesn’t require the drudgery of experimentation.   It’s a proven method I’ve developed for teaching a very profitable art form.  I can tell by observing a student’s body language and posture where to correct the bad habits before they become lifelong habits.”

Matt Windell concurs. “Regardless your level, you can always learn something new, especially in this great environment.  I learned so much in four days.”

The one-day introduction courses cost $150, and the four-day courses are $575.   Classes include all necessary equipment, materials, and supplies (airbrush, air source, substrates, paint, etc) at no extra cost. For more information, or to register, you may call 800-876-2472 (732-223-7878 for international callers) or go to www.airbrushaction.com.  Group discounts are available.

KILLER AIRBRUSH Q&A: Where can I get a tabletop spray booth?

Safety First

Where can get one of those hood-like things that are placed around the drafting table to absorb the overspray?  I no longer see them advertised. – David Spinney

You may have to seek them out, but SprayBoothWearing a respirator mask and keeping a window open for air flow will do in a pinch, but for big jobs or any situation where overspray is considerable, take steps to protect yourself.

Companies like Spray-Tech make tabletop booths that collect and vent overspray while protecting your workspace’s surroundings. Along with the necessary filters and other accessories, they cost about $300 and up from online retail sources. Also, Airbrush Action magazine has an inventory of used Artograph tabletop spray booths in great condition and at an excellent price.  You may contact them at 732-223-7878.

You can also go the DIY route and make a  simple overspray redirection system out of a box fan, an air-conditioner filter, and good old duct tape. Tape the frame of the filter to the back of the fan. Position the fan on the far side of your work surface and set it so that it will blow air away from you. (You should be able to see the filter, but not the fan blades, from your side of the setup.) Switch on the fan, and it will whisk the paint particles away from you and trap them in the filter.

KILLER AIRBRUSH Q&A: I’m looking for a paint that will give me a ghost effect on silver base … preferably in the red range, but not pink. Customer does not mind flip or flake. Any suggestions?

AIRBRUSH KILLER Q&A: Ghosting Effect

Looking for a paint that will give me a ghost effect on silver base … preferably in the red range, but not pink. Customer does not mind flip or flake. Any suggestions? – Anonymous

Super-transparent candy colors are commonly used for ghost effects. Add layers in selected spots to deepen the color, and voila, some areas pop and others fade away.

However, a true ghost effect—an element that totally disappears when viewed head-on, but emerges when glimpsed at an angle—can’t be achieved with color layers, says Terry Hill.  Instead, he’ll use texture instead of color for ghosting. “For example, a coarse-grain metallic along with a medium-grain metallic, both in the same color but one only in certain areas. Then the effect happens because of the textural layering. At a side angle it’s very prominent, but it’s invisible head-on.”

Another option is to work off the color values of an iridescent paint, one that flips through several tones as the viewer’s perspective changes.  Lay down a red base color and choose an iridescent product whose middle tone matches the base shade. “You paint the design with the iridescent paint, and then that top layer will disappear into the base color when you look at it head-on,” Hill says. “When you look from the side, you see the other tone, and the design emerges.”
