By using an ordinary felt-tip high-lighter to outline areas on the original, you can add color-either red or blue-tc the copy. The circled areas will copy in color but the circle will not appear on the copy. The copier scans the original, digitizes the information, and re-creates the image using laser technology. The Lanier model 62 13 brings the features of a large copier to a compact, affordable, back-to-basics unit. It has a stationary platen and a hinged, lift-off cover for copying three-dimensional and oversized originals. It reduces to 64 percent and enlarges to 124 percent in two preset reduction ratios and one enlargement ratio. Changeable modules allow the artist to change colors from black to red, green, blue, or brown. It copies on letterhead, transparencies, colored stock, and mailing labels up to 8 1/2" x 14". It retails for approximately $2,495.
The Lanier 6030 led the way with the first push-button color copying system. This model allows two colors at a touch-black with either red, brown, orblue-without having to change a cartridge. The machine's dual toner/developer system makes switching from black to another color quick and easy. The copier reduces to 64 percent and enlarges to 154 percent in 1 percent increments.
The copier has a magnification calculation function, much like a graphic arts proportional scale, which gives the exact reproduction size needed-this feature can save the graphic artist or designer time by eliminating a step in sizing art-work. It performs graphics and editing tasks in seconds.
The copier will also make same-size copies from various sizes of originals. The editing capabilities allow the operator to delete portions of the original work, center images, and resize them automatically. It deletes ghost lines from paste-up originals. By using the trim feature, areas of the original to be printed in a second or third color can be masked off and copied (great for making paper stencils for air- brushing).

The Minolta EP 3 120 is a desktop copier with a stationary platen that can make copies as large as 11" x 14". It reduces to 50 percent and enlarges to 200 percent in 1/10 percent increments. It is also a color copier, with red, blue, sepia, and green color units available. It retails at $2,895. Minolta EP 4230 is a desktop model with stationary platen, having the capability of making copies in three colors in one pass using Minolta's exclusive Simul-color@ process. The EP 4230 can reduce to 50 percent and enlarge to 200 percent in 1/10 percent increments, accepting originals and producing copies up to 11"x17". It costs $4,295.
The Minolta EP 8600 is a console model that fits the bill when high productivity is required. It produces letter-size copies at the rate of 60 per minute, with bookmaking capability. It also features a memory card that stores up to 10 different copying programs and retails for $15,695.

The Panasonic FP-2230 Color-on-Color Copier reduces to 61 percent and enlarges to 200 percent in increments of 1 percent. Push-button color in black, red, blue, green, and brown can be achieved with an optional module. It reproduces photos and halftones with amazing results. It minimizes background paste-up and tape marks. It sells for around $4,295. Panasonic unveiled its full-color digital laser copier, the FPC-1, this past summer. It is priced around $17.900.

The Ricoh 2010 is a desktop-sized model that can handle sheets of paper as large as 11" x 17". Color cartridges are available in black, red, blue, and green. It sells for $2,039. The Ricoh FT2260 reduces to 50 percent and enlarges up to 200 percent in 1 percent increments. This desktop copier handles paper up to 11" x 17". It costs $3,095.

The Toshiba BD-5120 is a desktop copier that can be configured to deliver copies by using a pushbutton color selection feature. At the touch of a finger, the copier will switch from black to a second color-red, blue, or brown. It reduces to 65 percent and enlarges to 154 percent with a zoom feature.
There are convenient preset and memory modes to store frequently used ratios. Other features include dual-page copying, automatic exposure, and dual cassettes. A variety of paper handling accessories is available. The unit sells for $3,995, and color units are extra.

The Xerox 5008 R/E is the smallest and lightest of the Xerox 50 series, a new line of machines introduced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the invention of the xerographic copying process. This personal unit makes copies up to 10"x 14". It has two easily installed cartridges, one an imaging device, the other containing toner and developer.
Optional color cartridges are available in red, blue, green, or brown. This machine can reduce to 64 percent and enlarge up to 124 percent by using two preset reduction ratios and one preset enlargement ratio. The 5008 R/E lists for $1,695. Color cartridges are available for $140.
The Xerox 5046 copier includes a photo mode for enhanced renditions of photographs, with an automatic contrast adjustment. This machine can be purchased for about $9,300 or rented for $277 per month. It contains a removable print cartridge that contains most of the key components of the xerographic copying process.
