Im doing flames on a tank. _base_ white yellow pearl over the top blending yellow to orange to either magenta or red.

My question to a achieve the blend normally I'd go do the yellow then blend the orange over the yellow then blend the red over the orange.

But would it be better to lay the yellow then mix the orange with yellow then blend to orange then mix the red with orange then blend to red.

Hey Fish! There's a very good article by Richard Markham in the July/August 2008 issue of AirBrush Action describing a way to do real fire. Richard basically starts building up some white and allowing some overspray to build up. I think he keeps the paint more towards the middle and allows the overspray to just happen naturally outside of that. From here, he uses some transparent red oxide around the outside edge of the white, allowing a good bit of the white overspray to be covered so it begins to blend in with the background. Richard then begins laying in some licks with white and a stencil. With the lick filled laid out, go over the whole area with transparent yellow. The red oxide and yellow will blend together to create orange, and the yellow will become a bright yellow where any white was left. I'd suggest you grab a copy of this edition for further reference if you can.
