Cred: Cheryl Vaughn owns and operates Amazon Airbrush. She began airbrushing T-shirts in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, in the 1980’s. Vaughn offers her body painting talents year-round, and the Halloween season is her favorite. She recently airbrushed the performance wardrobe for the band Sugarland’s 2012 Summer Tour. Vaughn is an instructor for the Airbrush Getaway Workshops and also teaches beginning airbrush workshops.
Beginners’ bottom line: “Learn your tool. Often, very talented artists become frustrated when they start working with the airbrush because it doesn’t use the same strokes or techniques as a pencil or paintbrush. If you take the time to learn your basic airbrush techniques, you’ll be able to transfer your artistry much more effectively.”
Pro pointers: “Learn from the artists you admire. Find someone in the industry whose strengths compliment your weaknesses and look to them.” I’ve had many mentors. Terry Hill knows the equipment so well. I’ve learned lettering from Gary Worthington and anatomy from Eddie Davis. I would love to someday be able to achieve Jonathan Pantaleon’s soft touch techniques. As a professional, you should always be fine-tuning your work.
